Oh!WhataLovelyPoster

OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR!

This year Malmesbury School are performing Oh What a Lovely War to coincide with the centenary of World War I. This pioneering musical was originally created by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop in 1963. The original Broadway production in 1965 won a Tony Award for best musical, then on the London stage in 2002 it won the Laurence Olivier award for best revived musical. Most of the songs are recognisable from the  World War I  era such as “It’s a long way to Tipperary, “Pack up your troubles” and “Keep the home fires burning” .

The show was considered to be ground-breaking, not only for its blatant denunciation of the political leaders’ incompetence during World War I, but also for its unusual theatrical style where the horrors of War are recalled through humour and frivolity, using visual stimuli such as circus costumes. Whilst at the same time the story of  World War I is told through a backdrop of authentic visuals, showing statistics such as “28,000 dead, gained 5 yards” and ” the average life of a machine gunner on the western front 15 minutes”.

Miss Edwards, Head of Drama,  comments  “We hope the production will prove as popular with parents and the local community as it has so far with our cast of over 80 students. We have all been reminded of the sacrifices made by soldiers in the Great War, and we know audiences will be equally moved by the juxtaposition of sadness and humour”

The performance takes place in the school hall at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 for adults and £5 for concessions. Please ring the school on 01666 829700 to request tickets. We very much look forward to seeing you there.

On 9th September 2001 67 UK citizens died alongside nearly 3,000 others in the most well known terrorist

attack in modern times. But what happened on that day and how did it occur?

It took the demands of the families of the dead to insist on a reason why their beloved died before the US

Government setup the 911 Commission, 2 years after the event, with the goal to produce a definitive report

on what happened and the causes of the events that took place.

Yet given the scope of this document there are many long standing professionals, covering Architects,

Scientists and Pilots, who have questioned the conclusions of the report and even point out omissions and

failings.

The intent of showing this film is to look at some of these independent investigations and their conclusions

versus the 911 Commission Report, as the US Government stated cause of the events on that fateful day.

There are several types of films covering 911. Those that are based on the book, which reinforces the US

government story, those that show the human tragedy of the day without looking to explain what happened

and why, and finally those that show how the events have been independently and scientifically analysed

producing a very different set of conclusions. As the years have passed so more and more evidence is being

identified and the conclusions are being refined.

There are many people who have tried to raise these questions within mainstream media. Take a look at how

sceptics have been treated both in the US and the UK. There is a dedicated BBC website into 911, which

echoes the 911 Commission Report, as well as a number of BBC produced Documentaries which are used to

reinforce this story and debunk questions and evidence raised by others.

Today there is a UK Charity providing teachers, which may have direct links to Companies running Academies,

with the tools to present the 911 Commission Report, supported by a BBC website, as history to our children.

50 Million people can’t be wrong? See the film and judge for yourself if the questions raised are valid and

merit further analysis to reopen the enquiry into what happened that day.

Venue: Malmesbury Town Hall, Assembly Hall

When: Wednesday 22nd January 2014, 6:30 pm for 7:00 showing

Refreshments: Sandwiches, Coffee and Tea

This is a not for profit showing with donations to cover costs.

Wednesday 22 January from 6:30 for 7.00pm

The most watched Independent film on the events of 9/11. This edition has

been seen by over 50 Million people worldwide. How does this compare to the

official 911 Commission Report?

A UK charity, setup on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 with US and UK donation

totalling £650,000, provides material to teach secondary school pupils the 9/11

Commission Report. It is time to judge for yourself if this is acceptable.

As attributed to Winston Churchill, but of unknown origin;

“History is written by the Victors.”

Refreshments; Sandwiches, Coffee and Tea

GRIMM FAIRY TALES… WITH MORE GRIM THAN FAIRY
SATURDAY 7TH DECEMBR AT 7PM

December sees The Pantaloons theatre company complete their tour of the country with their darkly magical production of Grimm Fairy Tales – a brand new adaptation of some of the best-loved stories ever to have graced the stage.

For this story-telling extravaganza Jacob and Wilhelm are joined by Ferdinand, the lesser known third Grimm brother – who doesn’t know how to tell a story – and the Wild sisters who were the Grimms’ neighbours and also the source of many of the tales.

Formed in 2004, the critically-acclaimed Pantaloons theatre company have a reputation for ambitious, highly physical and hilarious performances.

“We try to include something for everyone,” says producer Mark Hayward. “Children will love these tales as much as they ever have – particularly the more horrible elements – and adults will enjoy the clever ways in which the tales are staged along with the incredibly funny gags we’ve worked into the show.”

With a cast of just five actors playing over a hundred parts audiences can expect plenty of fast-changes, cross-dressing, comedy-wigs and silly-walks.

“There will be plenty of surprises along the way as each fairy tale will be told in a different style,” says Hayward. “There’s puppetry, poetry, parody, music and magic.”

Grimm Fairy Tales is suitable for all ages but very small children might want to bring an adult to hide behind.

Be prepared for the most enchanting theatrical production of the year… even if not every story ends happily ever after!

Tickets £12, £8 concessions are available at Malmesbury Tourist Information Centre,  www.thepantaloons.co.uk or on the door

Ten Tales of Malmesbury

Friends of Athelstan Museum have published another book on Malmesbury history but this time it is for 5 – 8 year olds. It is called Ten Tales of Malmesbury. And deals with ten episodes in Malmesbury’s past form the Hill Fort to the Tamworth Two via Eilmer, Walter Powell and others. It has been brilliantly illustrated with full page cartoons, one for each tale, by Phil Horswell.

The booklet will only cost £2.50 and give a easy child-friendly introduction to the history of Malmesbury; it will make the ideal stocking filler.

The booklet will be launched on Friday to coincide with Late Night Shopping; copies will be on sale at the museum. There is always a good crowd to drink our mulled wine so we hope they buy the book as well.

Phil Horswell is a professional illustrator. He now lives on Dartmoor but before that was in Malmesbury for some years. He is very fond of the town and that is why he wanted to be involved with the project. For more details see his website www.philhorswell.com
